Bricklayer jailed for attack at Harrow-on-the-Hill station
A BRICKLAYER has been jailed for four weeks for punching a male Tube worker and grabbing hold of a woman during an argument at Harrow-on-the-Hill station.
Laurence Glaze, 32, was sentenced on November 30 at Harrow Magistrates' Court over the incident that happened this summer in full view of other passengers and London Underground staff.
Aidan Harris, manager of London Underground's workplace violence unit, said: "Just before 5pm on July 8 this year, Glaze was in the ticket hall of Harrow-on-the Hill Tube station when he started challenging a female over spitting on the floor.
"The two individuals became involved in a heated argument during which Glaze grabbed hold of the woman.
"Two Tube workers came to help her and one of them, a customer service assistant (CSA) was punched in the face by Glaze.
"The other worker, a revenue control inspector (RPI), was knocked to the floor in the melee.
"At this point, some members of the public managed to split the female and Glaze up, but the bricklayer fled from the scene.
"Subsequently he was followed out by another member of staff who drew the incident to the attention of several PCSOs who were close to the station and a British Transport Police (BTP) officer later arrested him."
Glaze, of Bicester Road, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, failed to answer police bail and was later re-arrested in his hometown before being charged with three counts of common assault and skipping bail.
At court Glaze was convicted of the assaults on the female passenger and on the CSA and sentenced to 28 days' imprisonment.
He was given seven days' jail for failing to answer bail, to be served concurrently, while the third charge of assault against the RCI was dismissed.
Mr Harris said afterwards: "Our member of staff was simply trying to help when Glaze punched him in the face.
"People have a right to go to work without being subjected to this sort of nasty behaviour and this sentence ensures that people are made aware that this kind of conduct will not be tolerated."
BTP Inspector Kate Shaw said: "There is absolutely no justification for Glaze's actions and BTP officers will be looking out for anyone who behaves in this way towards London Underground staff over the Christmas period."
